Means of determining the order of nucleotides making up genes, chromosomes, plasmids, etc.

Figure legend: Representation of a sequencing gel, at this point a very old fashioned way to sequence DNA. Note that this would be generated based on gel electrophoresis. The direction of travel during running of the gel is as indicated, as too are the sizes of the DNA fragments. Each fragment is terminated at a specific nucleotide, with each nucleotide given its own, separate lane on the gel. The nucleotide sequence thus can be determined by tracing the increasing size of the DNA fragments. This technique is known as Sanger method.
