Ratio of phages added to a bacterial culture to the number of potentially phage-adsorbable bacteria present.
Multiplicity of Infection-Input (MOIinput) is used as a means of convenience because it is easier to determine how many phages are being added to a bacterial culture than it is to determine how many of those phages succeed in adsorbing, where generally the latter is what is sought when working with phages. |
Multiplicity of infection-input is both a useful and a problematic concept: useful for laboratory experiments where there is some reasonable expectation that most added phages will adsorb and problematic both if that expectation is not reasonable or the number of bacteria being added to is not known.
Contrast with multiplicity of infection-actual (MOIactual).
