The production of antibodies along with T-cell mediated cellular cytotoxicity, both as a means of protecting organisms from pathogens and parasites.

Adaptive Immunity is adaptive because it literally adapts, that is, a form of selection acts on genetic diversity – as found within our own bodies! – resulting in improvements, in this case of an immune response.
