Natural selection involves both survival and reproduction components though ultimately reproduction is not possible without survival. Reproductive success thus is the more basic component of fitness, which in turn is a description of the reproductive success of an organism in the face of natural selection. The word "bias" distinguishes natural selection from genetic drift, which describes instead a mechanism of unbiased change in allele frequencies.
