Microbiological growth media that allows one to distinguish, typically visually, among organisms that are capable of growing on that media.
There often is little difference between the idea of differential media and that of biochemical tests since usually the latter will provide some kind of distinction in terms of the appearance of organisms. Contrast differential media, however, with selective media as well as enrichment culture, though with the caveat that in many cases differential media is also selective media.
