Bacteriostatic antimicrobial drug used as a component of the treatment of Mycobacterium tuberculosis infections.

Ethambutol appears to work as an inhibitor of Mycolic acid incorporation into the mycobacteria cell envelope. It is employed as a secondary drug against M. tuberculosis, primarily as a means of limiting the evolution of antibiotic resistance.

Contrast with isoniazid.
