Synapsid clade, extant members of which consist of the placental mammals.

Eutherians are, of course, mammals, that is, eutherian mammals. Not all eutherians that have ever lived necessarily have been placental mammals, however.

Among extant synapsids (that is, members of class Mammalia), the eutherians can be distinguished from the marsupials as well as the monotremes.
