Gene Expression

Primary means by which genotype information is converted to phenotype, involving transcription and often translation as well.

Gene expression is the means by which genes give rise to gene products. The formation of gene products begins with transcription initiation and at a minimum results in the formation of an RNA transcript.

For gene expression to result in a functional protein product, then translation often must occur as well. Indeed, post-translational modification as well as protein activation too may be necessary.

The definition of "gene" is tied to its potential to be "expressed", i.e., a gene is a sequence of nucleotides that can be expressed.
