Genetic Recombination

Mixing together of the genetic material coming from different sources and employing mechanisms particularly as seen during meiosis.

Genetic recombination can occur due to molecular recombination or as a consequence of independent assortment (along with what is known as reassortment). The previously separated DNA can be such as from donor versus recipient cells. Contrast and compare simply with recombination.

Note that in genetic recombination the different DNAs typically will start in different individual organisms, what can be described as "Mom" versus "Dad". These DNAs are then brought together via fertilization which then, at some point, goes through meiosis in the course of a sexual cycle.
