Hereditary Material

Substance that is passed on from generation to generation that provides all of the information necessary for organism functioning.

In most organisms hereditary material consists of DNA though in some viruses it instead consists of RNA instead.

You can think of hereditary material as somewhat equivalent to software that tells a computer how to run or an architectural blueprint that indicates how to build a building, though hereditary material also and most importantly possesses all of the information necessary to encode its own duplication.
