Hybridization combines what can otherwise be divergent alleles and genes from two separate populations, often though not always to the detriment of the Darwinian fitness of the resulting hybrid.

Note that prezygotic barriers block the formation of hybrids while postzygotic barriers fail to block the formation of hybrids. These ideas are particularly relevant to the occurrence of speciation.
