Monosaccharide with its carbonyl group found on a middle rather than end carbon.
Typically this carbonyl group, called a ketone due to its location, is found on the second carbon of a chain. The simplest of ketoses is dihydroxyacetone, a triose. Fructose, a hexose, is also a ketose. See, by contrast, aldose.
