Digestive enzyme-containing vesicle, member of the eukaryotic cell endomembrane system.

Lysosomes are responsible for providing the enzymes necessary to digest materials that have been brought into the lumens of the endomembrane system.

They, for example, combine with phagosomes – produced in the course of phagocytosis – to produce what are known as phagolysosomes, the equivalent of the digestive system of phagotrophic protists as well as our own immune cells.
