Plasmogamy

The depositing of nuclei from two different fungal parents into a common cytoplasm.

Specifically, with plasmogamy an existing cell, possessing a haploid nucleus, receives a second haploid nucleus from a different parent. As a result the nuclei from two different parents persist as separate, haploid nuclei within the same cytoplasm. This dikaryotic state is then followed by what is known as karyogamy.

Plasmogamy is roughly the fungal equivalent to mating whereas karyogamy is roughly the fungal equivalent to conception.
