Cellular organisms that lack cell nuclei.
The prokaryotes are named in the negative, that is, for the lack of a feature (the cell nucleus), to contrast them with the eukaryotes, but this emphasis comes mainly from the eukaryotes having been described microscopically in some detail before the prokaryotes were. The prokaryotes nevertheless consist of the much more numerous than eukaryotes, domains Archaea and Bacteria.
