One (some) species as in Clostridium sp. which would be referring to some Clostridium species that otherwise is not being precisely defined, described, or identified.
There are many instances in which an effort is made only to describe a species down to the genus rather than species or strain level. Alternatively, the construct spp. is used to describe situations when more than one species of a given genus is being described.
