The false idea that living things, in modern times, can arise from non-living materials rather than descending from living parents.
The idea of Spontaneous Generation can be viewed as a reasonable if unscientific default perspective on the biology of especially small organisms which can difficult to observe in the act of reproducing, that is, that these things 'just happen' (e.g., food spoils) rather than there being organism life cycles and metabolism as their bases (e.g., as a kin to babies 'just happen' before one comes to better appreciate underlying causes). |
See, by contrast, biogenesis and univocal generation.
