Animal taxon consisting particularly of the insects.
Hexapoda is a subphylum of phylum Arthropoda and, other than phylum Arthropoda, subphylum Hexapoda is the most diverse animal phylum. Particularly, more animal species are insects than anything else.
Hexapod quite literally means six legs, referring to the three pairs of legs seen with adult insects. Juvenile insects consist of larvae.
The insects possess three main body segments, or tagmata, the head, thorax, and abdomen, each of which is composed of additional fused >segments (i.e., tagmata).
The legs are found solely on the thorax, which not coincidentally is composed of three fused segments. The thorax additionally carries two pairs of wings, if present.
