Especially cell division/reproduction of individual cells, resulting in increases in population size.

Microbial Growth – as it involves especially increases in population size – contrasts with that of growth of multicellular organisms, which occurs in terms especially of increases in body mass, body size, and/or body cell number.

The above video provides walks through what a standard bacterial growth curve is all about. I recommend watching it at 1.25× or 1.5× speed, however.

The above video provides a nice overview of various issues that people consider in terms of bacterial growth. Note, though, thought it is binary fission, not binary fusion. :-(

The first 30 or so seconds of the above video shows time-lapsed growth of colony; also shows other aspects of microscopy of Legionella including fluorescence microscopy.

The above video illustrates biofilm formation and persistence in hospital water supplies.

This video provides a nice run through of how a vegetative bacterium turns into an endospore.
