Anabolism

Chemical reactions associated with organisms that are energy requiring and which build molecules up.

Anabolism basically is one half of metabolism, the part that uses energy, versus catabolism which is the part that supplies energy.

Dehydration synthesis is an important example of an anabolic reaction, such as is involved in the formation of proteins, lipids, RNA, and DNA. See by contrast catabolism as well as metabolism.

Anabolic reactions are what result in organism growth, repair, and reproduction, though these processes cannot take place unless usable energy is available to power them, which generally is in the form of ATP.
