Overgrowth especially by opportunistic pathogens that is associated with normal flora depletion (dysbiosis) that occurs in the course of antibacterial therapy.

Prominent examples include Clostridium difficile-associated colitis and Candida albicans yeast infections. See also antibiotic and superinfection.

Antibiotic-associated superinfections are associated particularly with antibiotics that display a somewhat broad spectrum of activity rather than antibacterials that display a somewhat narrow spectrum of activity.
