Aseptic Technique

Means of protecting yourself as well as everything around you from microorganisms.

These include various approaches one employs to avoid contaminating one's cultures, one's patients, oneself, and one's environment with either environmental or cultured microorganisms.

Aseptic technique involves personal cleanliness (e.g., hand washing), constant monitoring of one's actions, and specific approaches to killing microorganisms. Part of medical training, at any level, involves learning proper aseptic technique and the cost of failing to do so includes the spreading of deadly infections.

The most important thing you can do in terms of aseptic technique is to be conscious of your actions, particularly in terms of how contaminated surfaces are, by (ideally) not making contact with uncontaminated surfaces with contaminated materials, and to regularly wash your hands!
