Births as used ecologically means more than just the bringing forth of offspring directly into the world vaginally – that is, versus as an egg – but instead refers to the result of all forms of organism reproduction. Contrast with simply birth.

One tends to see this usage of 'births' in ecological modeling where, for example, for a population size at steady state births equal deaths.
