Centromere

Point of attachment of sister chromatids during metaphase and also point of attachment of kinetochores.

Metaphase chromosomes can be classified in terms of where their centromere are located – such as in the middle, offset from the middle, near the end, etc. – as well as how much of the chromosome consists of centromere.

The centromere also is the point of separation of sister chromatid pairs into separate sister chromatids in anaphase, with the resulting now two centromeres remaining associated with kinetochores throughout anaphase.
