Organism that requires the presence of oxygen in order to replicate.

Note that is somewhat narrow definition (through reasonable in its narrowness). This is because some organisms that are described as obligate aerobes actually can still replicate under under anaerobic conditions. They do this because rather than strictly obligate aerobes they instead are strictly obligate users of electron transport chains for the generation of ATP (that is, obligate cellular respirerers), but the final electron acceptor in these cases can be substances in addition to molecular oxygen.
