Polypeptide Antibiotics

Antibacterial agents that are based on amino acids, either linked together in the course of translation or synthesized by other means.

Especially the later can be substantially modified beyond the basic amino acid structure. Bacitracin as well as polymixin B, for example, are polypeptide antibiotic. Polypeptide antibiotics are also described as peptide antibiotics and include substances produced by many organisms including as antibacterial substances synthesized by animals.
