Biased choosing, biased survival, or biased propagation.

In biology when one says Selection typically what is meant is natural selection, but more generally it is some kind of bias in how things occur.

Figure legend: Filtration is a form of selection where the thing that is being filtered out is being selected against. The resulting 'population' found in the filtrate is biased in some manner, such as towards smaller particles (black), as relative to the original population (smaller black plus larger gray).

Figure legend: Natural selection results from impact of the environment on the degree to which specific genotypes are presented in the next generation. Going from genotype to the impact of natural selection, however, is not a trivial process and indeed is what makes biology so complex.
