Tradeoffs

Diminishment of one advantage for the sake of gain in another.

Often tradeoffs are considered to be a problem since they limit the ability of a species to optimize or maximize one trait or ability due to the negative impact that doing so has on another trait or ability. The study of evolutionary optimization is concerned explicitly in terms of how organism fitness can be enhanced in light of tradeoffs. Tradeoffs tend to be very relevant generally in considerations of evolutionary ecology and ultimate causation. See also antagonistic pleiotropy.
