Biogeography emphasizes both where organisms are located, and how their distributions change, but also, and importantly, why organisms are distributed as we find them.

Increasingly the biogeography of microorganisms is studied in terms of nucleotide sequencing, either with or without prior culturing. In particularly, techniques of metagenomics are employed.
