Equivalent to plasma membrane in Gram-negative bacteria.
Contrast with outer membrane.
A homologous and equivalently named structure is also found in both mitochondria and chloroplasts. In those endosymbiotic organelles the inner membrane is surrounded by the intermembrane space whereas in Gram-negative bacteria the inner membrane instead is surrounded the otherwise intermembrane-space-homologous periplasm.
