Phagolysosomes form from the fusion of phagosomes with lysosomes, the former supplying the endocytosed material (i.e., as obtained via phagocytosis) and the latter supplying the digestive enzymes.
Various microorganisms are resistant to the digestion step associated with phagocytosis – by blocking phagolysosome formation, resisting digestion once formed, etc. – and thus can resist this aspect of innate immunity.
