Thylakoid

Membrane-enclosed organelle site of the light reaction of photosynthesis in chloroplasts and cyanobacteria.

The proton motive force generated by the light reaction of photosynthesis is across the thylakoid membrane. Indeed, chlorophyll and many of the various other molecules involved in the light reaction, including particularly the electron transport chains, are found within the thylakoid membrane.

The interior or lumen of thylakoids is known as the thylakoid space.

As means of increasing cell membrane area the thylakoids are analogous in their functioning to the cristae of mitochondria.
