Degree of sharpness of an image.

Improving the resolving power of a microscope results in less image fuzziness. This improvement can be accomplished by a variety of means include the use of blue filters and employing oil immersion.

Resolution

Figure legend: Saguaro cactus, normal resolution of photograph is on the left while the photograph on the right was shrunk, compressed, and then blown up again. Photo taken December, 2010, outside of Tucson, AZ.

Increasing magnification without increasing resolution will not allow you to see a specimen any easier. You can see what this means if you zoom in on a photo far enough on a computer. At some point you will see just increasingly magnified fuzziness. This means that you have reached the limit of resolution of whatever image you are observing.
