Tight Junction

Connection between animal cells that serve as a waterproof barrier between one side of a cell layer and the other.

Tight junctions particularly function within epithelial layers that separate compartments within bodies such as between the lumen of the small intestine and the interior of the body and in certain locations within nephrons of the kidneys.

See by contrast gap junctions and desmosomes, which also are connections found between animal cells.
